Restaurants in Penne

This is a partial list of restaurants inside the wall and in easy walking distance of the house; there are many more outside or in easy driving distance. There are also many pizzerias inside and outside the walls. Be careful with the opening hours for restaurants: to be sure of being served, you should aim to eat between 1-2pm in the afternoon or 8-9pm in the evening.

Ristorante La Grotta

Getting there: Turn left out of the house and walk straight on and down till you join the main street and see the first shops. Turn left on the main street, and La Grotta is immediately visible in the first side-street on the right.
Description: Run by Laura, who speaks good English. This is a family-run local restaurant. There is no menu - Laura will tell you what dishes are available each day. Quality is excellent and quantities large.
Giampy's Pub

Getting there: Turn right out of the house then go down the steep hill (there is a handrail) to the small square at the bottom. Giampy's is just next to the gate
Description: Mainly a pizzeria and bar, though they also do meals.

Getting there: Turn left out of the house and walk straight on and down till you join the main street and see the first shops. Turn left on the main street and walk till you come to the main square, Luca da Penne. The restaurant is on your right.
Description: Run by Antonio, who lived in England for many years, and his family. The restaurant also does english food on request, if you're desperate for a full english breakfast. Good value and friendly; the place is bustling most times in the day. The cafe gives more free biscuits with an espresso than I've ever seen anywhere!
Ristorante Gran Sasso - Hotel Dei Vestini

Getting there: Turn left out of the house and walk straight on and down till you join the main street and see the first shops. Turn left on the main street and walk on to the main square, Luca da Penne. Leave the square from the first exit on the left, which takes you straight down to the main road. Cross the main road and follow the road in front of the supermarket down the hill to the large hotel at the bottom. Tell the reception desk you want to eat; the restaurant is just to the right of reception.
Description: the style is 70s retro, but the food is good and traditional and the portions are large. The staff are friendly and the Maitre D' speaks English.
Don Chisciotte

Getting there: Turn left out of the house and walk straight on and down till you join the main street and see the first shops. Turn right on the main street and walk on towards the main gate, San Francesco. Don Chisciotte is on the right before you reach the gate.
Description: Pizzeria and bar, though they may do other food. Open later than most places in Penne, so popular with the students. Welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Has karaoke some evenings.

Turn left on the main street and walk till you come to the main square, Luca da Penne. Walk straight across the square and out the other side; the restaurant is in the next little square shortly after.
Description: We have never eaten there as it always seems to be closed on days we are hungry and nearby. Sometimes has a jazz pianist playing with meals.

Turn left on the main street and walk till you come to the main square, Luca da Penne. Walk straight across the square and out the other side; then straight across the next little square. The restaurant is on the right shortly after.
Description: Cheap, cheerful and organic, partly aimed at students from the Technical College round the corner. In a spectacular building formerly part of the palace of Margarita of Austria. Has recently relaunched; the food style may have changed.

Getting there: Turn left out of the house and walk straight on and down till you join the main street and see the first shops. Turn left on the main street and walk till you come to the main square, Luca da Penne. Walk straight across the square and out the other side; take the first left and the restaurant is near the end of the street just before the town gate.
Description: The restaurant is at the back, behind the bar. They do good porchetta, but we haven't eaten here yet. Let us know.
